Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP)





How is retinopathy of prematurity diagnosed? Retinopathy of prematurity doesn’t cause any signs or symptoms when it develops in a newborn baby. It is discovered during an eye exam conducted by an eye doctor. During the appointment, Dr Yako will dilate your baby’s pupils using eye drops. He will then use a speculum to hold the eyelids open and use a sclera depressor to help him move the eye around to check the retina. An ophthalmoscope may also be used to examine the retina.

Childhood blindness is a group of diseases and conditions that occur in childhood or early adolescence which result in blindness or severe visual impairment if left untreated. Blindness in children is caused by lesions of the optic nerve, corneal scarring due to measles, vitamin A deficiency, the use of harmful traditional eye remedies and rubella cataract.

A squint, also known as strabismus, is a condition where the eyes do not align properly. This is when one eye turns inwards, upwards, downwards or outwards, while the other one is focused on one spot. This may happen all the time or intermittently. Squinting of the eye or eyes occurs due to the muscles that control the movement of the eyes and the eyelid, called the extraocular muscles, are not working together properly.
